A review by Sacks et al in 2009 set out to answer this very question.
Their conclusion was that reduced calorie diets resulted in clinically meaningful weight loss, improvements in lipid biomarkers and insulin sensitivity regardless of the macronutrient ratio.
Eat 2 serves of fruits and 5 serves of vegetables a day, when choosing carbohydrate opt for low GI foods such as brown bread over white rice and enjoy the occasional treat - just don't eat too much.
