When overall strength is measured women tend to be 60-80% as strong as men. However when measured in terms of strength per square centimetre of cross-sectional area, the female muscle can achieve almost the same maximal force of contraction as that of the male - between 3 and 4 kg/cm^2. Therefore most of the difference in total muscle strength lies in the extra percentage of the male body that is muscle. This difference in total muscle mass is caused by differences in the production of endocrine hotmone
