We have all heard that drinking 1-2 glasses of red wine a day is good for the heart but what about the effects on sex hormones.

Drinking alcohol is a risk factor for the development of gynecomastia. For those of you who don't know, this is the medical term for the development of breast tissue in males - known on the street as "man boobs".

Alcohol is believed to exert its effect by increasing the concentration of the enzyme aromatase. This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone (the "male" hormone) into oestrogen (the "female" hormone). Thus the more alcohol you drink, the more testosterone is converted into oestrogen and hence the less "manly" you become.

Multiple studies however have shown that phytochemicals present in red wine may offset these effects and actually inhibit the action of aromatase thus potentially increasing the levels of testosterone in the body.

More research is needed but it is possible that drinking 1-2 glasses of red wine a day might just make you more "manly" after all .
